Over 300 years old, Dunmore Town served as the first capital of the Bahamas when in 1787 British Loyalists fled the American War of Independence. John Murray, Earl of Dunmore and last Royal Governor of Virginia served as Governor of the Bahamas and established Dunmoretown as his capital. The town's architecture is a unique blend of an intimate New England village combined with striking Caribbean colors. Shady verandas are punctuated by sprays of hibiscus and bougainvillea and the ever present, crystalline blue waters. There are very few cars on the island (most visitors explore on bicycles or rented golf carts!) and no high rises are permitted. Sophisticated travelers who have discovered this unspoiled island paradise come back year after year to enjoy it's amazing beauty, casual social life and intoxicating atmosphere.

From Nassau, Bahamas: Only a 20-minute flight. Bahamasair propjets make daily direct scheduled flights to North Eleuthera Airport. A picturesque 10-minute water taxi trip completes your journey.

North Eleuthera Airport
(September 18, 2003) Repairs completed last year have provided this airport with a landing strip of 6,000 feet and new lights that permit night landings.

If you're coming to Harbour Island from Europe, you can fly to Nassau from London or Paris. From the United States, fly into Nassau, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale.

From any of these three cities make Be sure you are booked into the tiny airport at North Eleuthera (ELH); other airports on Eleuthera will require a very long taxi ride. ELH is served by these airlines.

North Eleuthera Airport is a Port of Entry for private flights with a 4,500 foot runway with no tower, and currently no gas. However, plans are afoot to provide gas and open a jet center.

Island Seaplanes is now bringing day trippers to Harbour Island from Nassau. The plane pulls right up to Government Dock. Prices from $79 per person. Plans are afoot eventually to add a day trip from Harbour Island. Currently the schedule is:
